Relief in Action: Will’s Role in Rebuilding Carriacou After Hurricane Beryl
Will at Wildwood Digital is proud to be a trustee and long-time supporter of DART International UK, a charity that deploys specialist teams to provide disaster relief in areas affected by natural catastrophes. DART (Disaster Arborist Response Team) focuses on helping communities recover by clearing fallen trees, restoring access routes, and providing training in tree removal and chainsaw use—crucial skills in disaster recovery.
Will of Wildwood Digital is the Marketing Manager of DART International UK managing their website, social media, mass emails and CRM. Will also assists the charity by helping with sponsors and communications. Will's work with DART pays homage to his many years as a Tree Surgeon for D W Tree Services.
In July, after Hurricane Beryl—the earliest Category 5 storm in Caribbean history—devastated the island of Carriacou, I was deployed alongside a small team to provide on-the-ground support. We worked with local agencies like the National Disaster Management Agency (NaDMA) to clear roads and ensure communities could begin to rebuild.
Arriving on the island, the scale of the destruction was immense: roofs torn off, powerlines down, and trees blocking vital access routes. One of our first tasks was removing a large tree resting dangerously on power lines, cutting off several homes. Working efficiently and safely with donated gear, we helped restore access to these homes and began the long process of recovery.
Over the following days, we teamed up with the Caribbean Disaster Response Unit (CDRU) and trained local volunteers in safe chainsaw handling, ensuring they could continue the work long after we’d left. This was a vital part of our mission—building the skills and resilience of the community to be better prepared for future challenges.
Despite the challenges, we left the island knowing we made a difference. Clearing roads, reopening access, and empowering the community was an incredibly rewarding experience. A second team followed to continue the work we started, ensuring Carriacou could recover.
It’s deployments like this that demonstrate the heart of DART’s mission: rapid action, specialist support, and empowering communities. If you’d like to support DART’s ongoing work, consider becoming a Friend of DART with a small monthly donation of just £10.
